What's Lurking!?
Mar 27, 2022Predators! It is spring and they are hungry. This video is of a magnificent (brazen) fox that was visiting my daughter, Beth. Up close and personal is not normal but he is looking for food. Chicken or a juicy pheasant looks like a fine dinner for them. the Racoons are also leaving tracks around our birds at night. The magpies are stealing eggs right off the front porch! The owls and eagles have been circling. We love sharing the earth with these gorgeous creatures but not our birds!
The battle is on! We do all we can to keep our birds safe and still give them freedom to be super happy. The critters will have to find a rabbit or fish the river but we are not planning to feed them our birds. Our big chicken yard is covered with the same netting zoos use to protect. The fence is buried three feet deep and wire bent two feet out underground to deter the diggers. We have a watch Corgi that HATES all manner of coyotes, fox or neighbor's weiner dogs on our ranch and tells them so! She earns her chow!
Our rescue shepherd, Shera, is now deaf and nearly blind but she looks dangerous to the unknowing. Mostly she just shadows my cowboy all day but if the Corgi alerts her she can put up a good barrage of barking.
Locking up the birds at night is an important safety plan as well. When the corgi is tucked into our bed for the evening those creatures KNOW she's off duty and come sniffing. Our Arlo motion detected video system provides breakfast entertainment as we check out the night prowlers to plan to protect. Be sure you have a safety system for your birds!
Keep your sunny side up,
Nancy
